| Municipal advocates plan 'MET' golf tourney |
Looking to capture some of the same winning formula from a 1984 fund-raising tournament, a Carroll Municipal Golf Course committee has announced plans for an Aug. 28 best-ball to raise money for a remodeling of the clubhouse area. The MET (Municipal Expansion Tournament) Revival is scheduled for two waves of shotgun starts with people from both competing in the same tournament. Shotgun starts will be at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the Saturday, Aug. 28 loops.

Professional soccer came to Carroll this week. You may have missed it, but 63 kids from ages 5 all the way to 18 did not. The Des Moines Menace Soccer Club of the Premier Development League, which boasts 68 teams across North America, held a camp at the Carroll soccer complex. The camp began at 10 in the morning and ran until 4 that afternoon.

IRWIN - Lynsie Sievertsen’s achievement proved to be greater than her shortcomings. The IKM-Manning shortstop belted a two-run homer and an inning later committed two errors that led to a run, but the Wolves held off Missouri Valley 3-1 Monday to advance to a regional final.

title in 2A golf |
PANORA — The Kuemper Catholic High School boys golf team repeated as state 2A golf champions in Panora Saturday with a 6-shot win over its nearest competitor and wider margins over the state’s other top teams in a talented field. Junior Nate Molak led the Knights with second-place individual honors on rounds of 75 and 79 on a nearly 7,000-yard state playoff layout at the Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

Andie Reischl gunned down the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra frames and Laura Eberly scored the winning run in the ninth to give IKM-Manning a 7-5 win over Charter Oak-Ute in conference softball Wednesday.

It was unseasonably cool for August in Kansas City. Actually, it was downright cold, and the rain didn’t help. The game-time temperature was barely in the 50s and quickly fell as the sun set and the rains poured. We dodged the rain drops at Worlds of Fun during the day, but now at Royals Stadium the weather was tough to endure. (1 comments)

| Kuemper introduces new football coach

Having learned from some of the best, Brian Webb plans to get the best out of the Kuemper Catholic football team. Webb was introduced as the Knight’s head coach Tuesday afternoon where he met coaches, players and fans at the Kuemper weight room. He replaces Justin Penner, who resigned in April to become the head football coach at Class 4A Mason City.

| Kuemper hires football coach |
Brian Webb, an assistant coach at West Des Moines Valley High School, has been hired as the head football coach at Kuemper Catholic High School for the 2010 season. Kuemper Catholic president/superintendent Vern Henkenius announced in a press conference at the school Monday the hiring of Webb, who will also be a physical education and health instructor as well as assistant track and weight room coordinator.
