A big jeer goes today to U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, for making outlandish statements about immigrants to the conservative news website Newsmax.

King said he didn't agree with the suggestion that many youths who aren't legal citizens are also high-achieving.

"For every one who's a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they've got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert," King said.

Is this reflective of the way western Iowans view Latinos? Is this the way Christians talk about people of other races?

The congressman is well within bounds of decency to call for a strict adherence to the rule of law and tough treatment of all people residing in the United States without proper documents. That's a policy position.

But King seems to relish bashing the Latino community with these sorts of comments, which will drown his party's viability with a national electorate for generations if he remains a chief spokesperson on immigration, or anything for that matter.
