Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, will join the Carroll County Democrats for a family-friendly Independence Day celebration at Graham Park in Carroll from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 4.

The event is free and open to members of the public and the local media.

“We are beyond excited to welcome ‘Mayor Pete’ to Carroll,” said Peter Leo, Carroll County Democratic Party chair. “No matter your political stripes, you cannot deny that Pete Buttigieg is an impressive public servant and a top-tier contender for the Democratic nomination. This event is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet and hear from a gentleman who will be a prominent figure in national politics for years to come.”

Food and nonalcoholic beverages will be provided, and guests are welcome to bring their own beverages as well. There is no cost to attend, but free-will donations to the Carroll County Democratic Party to help cover the cost of the event are welcome and appreciated.

Buttigieg is in his eighth and final year as mayor of South Bend, Indiana. He first was elected mayor in 2011 at only 29 years old and re-elected in 2015 with 80 percent of the vote. Under his leadership, South Bend has reimagined its role in the global economy, spurring job growth and major investment in advanced industries such as data and technology.

Buttigieg served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve and took an unpaid seven-month leave during his mayoral term to deploy to Afghanistan. For his counterterrorism work, he earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

A Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and a graduate of Harvard University, Buttigieg lives with his husband Chasten in the same South Bend neighborhood where he grew up, with their two rescue dogs, Truman and Buddy.
