A Panora police officer who responded Sunday night to the report of a man threatening people with a knife shot and killed the man, according to the state Division of Criminal Investigation, which is looking into the incident.

Someone called 911 about 7:20 p.m. and said the man with the knife — who was not immediately identified publicly by investigators — was making the threats at an apartment building at 502 W. Market St.

An officer ordered the man to drop the knife several times, but the man refused. The officer shot him, and he later died despite efforts to resuscitate him.

The officer — who also was not immediately identified — is on paid leave from work until the investigation of the shooting is complete.

Further details were expected to be released this week.
