A 30-year-old Carroll man broke the eye socket of another man when he repeatedly hit and kicked the victim on the ground, according to a police report.

Matthew Cody Johnston faces a felony willful injury charge for the June 25 fight. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Officers responded to the fight about 4 a.m. at Camden Apartments, near the intersection of East 18th Street and North Randall Road. The victim was bleeding from his left eye and nose.

Officers went door-to-door at the apartment complex in search of Johnston, but he wasn’t arrested until six days later after an officer reviewed a video recording of the incident.

The video shows Johnston punching and kicking a man on the ground, a criminal complaint alleges.

Johnston “at one point walks away from the victim as if he was done and then comes back a second time in order to strike the victim multiple times more,” the complaint says.

Johnston was arrested Saturday. He posted a $5,000 bond to be released from jail.

It’s unclear what led to the altercation.
