A city commission has certified three current Carroll police officers as eligible for promotion to their department’s long-vacant captain job.

They are Sgt. Gary Bellinghausen, Officer Ethan Kathol and Sgt. J.J. Schreck.

Bellinghausen, 47, of Lake City, has worked for the department for about 18 years.

Kathol, 27, of Carroll, has been with the department for four years.

Schreck, 38, of Carroll, has worked for the department for about 11 years.

One of them will replace longtime Capt. Mark Heino, who retired near the end of 2016. Police Chief Brad Burke said Heino’s successor will be selected in the coming weeks.

The city’s three-person Civil Service Commission certified the officers as eligible for the captain’s post earlier this month. The officers had interviews, presentations and written exercises with Cayler Consulting before their interviews with the commissioners, Burke said.
