Zanders named principal at Greene County Middle School
May 24, 2013
Shawn Zanders will join the Jefferson-Scranton staff as principal of Greene County Middle School for the new school year.
Zanders is currently principal at Ogden High School, a post he started last August.
Except for his year in Ogden, his entire career has been with the Coon Rapids-Bayard Community School District. He taught business there from 1990 to 2000, and served as 7-12 principal there from 2000 through the 2011-12 school year. He also coached golf and football.
Zanders earned bachelor's degrees in business education and accounting from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. He completed a master's degree in school leadership from Iowa State University in 2002.
He sees the role of a building principal as being a "principle" teacher. He sees the principal as a resource for teachers, as someone teachers can look to for help and advice in solving education problems, and he likes to spend a lot of time in classrooms. That way he gets to see teachers "at work" and gets to know students, he said.
Zanders and his wife Tina live in Coon Rapids. They have a son who has finished his first year at Iowa State University and a daughter who will be a junior at Coon Rapids-Bayard High School next year.
Zanders enjoys following his children's activities, biking, hiking, running, lifting weights, gardening, and walking the family's three dogs.
"I'm excited to have this opportunity at Greene County Middle School. I've heard good things about Jefferson-Scranton and East Greene, soon to be the Greene County Schools," Zanders said.
