Toddler drowns at state park

A trip to Spring Lake State Park on an unseasonably hot day resulted in tragedy Tuesday. Ransom Lewis Cummings, 3, of Jefferson, drowned after he wandered away from his family.
Emergency crews were dispatched to Spring Lake, a popular park about three miles northwest of Grand Junction, at 1:14 p.m., according to Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert.
Greene County conservation and parks personnel who were working at the lake had been notified that the 3-year-old was missing. The boy had wandered away from his mother and two older siblings. He apparently walked onto a dock on the east side of the beach area of the lake.
Several Grand Junction firemen as well as park staff were already in the water when chief deputy Jack Williams spotted Cummings approximately 6 feet from the end of the dock in about 5 feet of water.
Cummings was unconscious when he was pulled from the water. Efforts to revive the boy failed.
He was taken by ambulance to Greene County Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Ransom Cummings is a son of Chad and Emily Cummings, of Jefferson.
