One of the three men accused of viciously beating a 28-year-old Lanesboro man this month will argue he attacked the man to protect himself, according to court records.

Ricky R. Blair, 55, of Lanesboro, who is accused of pushing his way into a neighbor's house with two other men, will give evidence of self-defense if his case goes to trial, but court records do not contain details of that evidence.

Blair, Luke D. Clark, 41, of Yetter, and Mitchell W. Blair, 41, of Vail, are accused of using a shotgun and part of a counter top to assault David Warnke, 28, of Lanesboro, at his house in the 200 block of North Fourth Street on Sept. 1.

Warnke was allegedly beaten unconscious and suffered broken teeth and facial bones. Law officers have not disclosed a motive for the attack.

His alleged attackers face four felony charges for burglary, willful injury and assault. They face up to 50 years in prison if convicted.

Each paid $1,000 bond to be released from Carroll County jail.

Warnke was taken by helicopter after the assault to a Des Moines hospital, where he was treated for the injuries and was set for surgery to reconstruct his face, Sheriff Doug Bass has said.

Warnke's memory of the attack was spotty three days later when officers interviewed him at the hospital.

"There's a lot of things he doesn't remember, like why it all happened," Bass told the Daily Times Herald that week.
