Late Carroll woman gives $54,000 to hospice

St. Anthony Regional Hospital has received a $54,000 gift from the estate of Justina Langel, who had been affiliated with the medical center for years as an employee and volunteer.
Langel passed away at age 95 on Sept. 21, 2012, at Carroll Health Center in Carroll.
"Her whole life she enjoyed giving to others and helping other people out," said Tom Langel of Carroll, Justina Langel's nephew.
Ms. Langel grew up on a farm just south of Templeton. After her mother passed away in 1954, Justina moved to Carroll where she began working at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in food services for 13 years. She also worked at Carroll Manor Nursing Home (now Regency Park). Later in life, she was an active volunteer with the St. Anthony Auxiliary.
Langel was an avid card player, enjoyed bingo and traveling. She also took pleasure in gardening and entertaining friends and family.
The gift will benefit St. Anthony Regional Hospice. One of the goals of hospice is to affirm life and help patients "live until they die" by encouraging them to participate in life as fully as possible, said Ed Smith, president and CEO of St. Anthony Regional Hospital.
The mission of hospice is to provide comfort, support and compassionate care for persons in the final stages of illness. Hospice also provides support for family members, who are often serving as caretakers for the ill person.
Spiritual care is an important part of the disciplinary team approach in providing support to patients and their families. St. Anthony's chaplain offers spiritual support as needed and also serves as liaison between the patient, family and their individual clergy, Smith said.
Spiritual care is provided to all individuals of all faiths.
"We are grateful and honored that Justina chose to include St. Anthony in her estate planning," Smith said. "Everyone who knew Justina remembers her as a kind and caring person. Our hospice and pastoral care ministries are great examples of the things that were important to Justina."
