Investigators seek clues to apartment fire
July 31, 2013
A fire early Tuesday morning in a small apartment building on the north side of Carroll that caused about $100,000 damage started on a bed mattress, but investigators have yet to determine how it ignited, Fire Chief Greg Schreck said today.
"We haven't ruled anything out," he responded when asked whether the fire was an accident or arson. "We're looking at all possibilities."
The fire at 1826 N. Randall Road was reported about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Schreck said a man was asleep in a ground-level bedroom of the four-unit building when the fire started in the room. A woman in the apartment woke him and alerted other tenants to flee, Schreck said.
No one was seriously injured. One man was forced to escape out of a bedroom window.
The fire spread quickly through a window and climbed the back of the building into another apartment. There was significant fire damage to those two apartments and smoke and water damage to the other two, Schreck said.
Schreck and a state fire marshal planned to review the fire again today. Police Chief Jeff Cayler said his department is also investigating the case.
