Matt Hodges’ kid inspired him to run for City Council.

Hodges, father of 9-year-old Maddux, is the third candidate to file for an open council seat, which will appear on the ballot Aug. 1.

“Carroll is a good place to live (with kids),” Hodges said. “I want to see Carroll continue to grow and thrive — and it has — and I’d like to be a part of that for my kids.”

Hodges, 40, joins LaVern Dirkx and Ronald “Woody” Beyer on the ballot for an at-large council seat. Dirkx was appointed to the seat in January when it opened up midterm — former council member Brandon Vonnahme stepped down after his family moved just outside the city limits.

While stationed in Des Moines during his six years with the National Guard, one of which he spent in Iraq, Hodges worked in commercial landscaping. Back in Carroll for about eight years, he has worked at Computer Concepts, Trophies Plus and the Carroll County jail.

For the past several months, Hodges has served on the city’s Parks and Recreation Committee.

In the past, he volunteered with Central Iowa Underwater Search and Rescue and was involved with the Carroll County Ambulance Service, both as a volunteer emergency medical technician and a part-time employee.

Hodges’ parents, Steve and Kathy Hodges, live in Carroll as well. His son, Maddux, is heading into fourth grade at Adams Elementary School.

“As somebody with a young son going to school here, I want Carroll to thrive and to be better,” Hodges said.
