Longnecker bows out, only 1 contest remains in Carroll elections
October 2, 2013
Third Ward candidate for the Carroll City Council Dan Longnecker told the Daily Times Herald Tuesday he was dropping out of the race.
Longnecker, 61, a semi-retired, longtime resident of Carroll, cited health and personal considerations.
Longnecker said he planned to read a statement at next Wednesday's Carroll Chamber of Commerce candidate forum to withdraw.
Because he officially filed, and missed a Sept. 23 date to pull out of the race, Longnecker's name remains on the 1,000 ballots already printed for 3rd Ward voters, according to the Carroll County Auditor's Office.
The other candidate on the ballot in Ward 3 is Carroll businessman Clay Haley.
Longnecker said he wishes Haley the best of luck as a member of the council.
Longnecker's decision means only one of the four city positions before voters in November involves a competitive race.
Three candidates - Kyle Fesenmeyer, Jerry Fleshner and Amber Raak - are seeking the at-large seat being vacated by Councilman Jeff Scharfenkamp.
Mayor Adam Schweers and Ward 1 Councilman Michael Kots are running unopposed on the ballot. Voters can write in choices, but no candidates have emerged publicly asking for support in that manner.
