Students from Kuemper Catholic High School and Middle School and Carroll Middle School performed for judges Saturday, April 6, in a music festival hosted at Kuemper’s St. Lawrence Center.

The fifth- through 12th-graders received ratings for their performances in one of the three performance centers. Judges were Gayle Strom, Storm Lake St. Mary Catholic Schools music teacher; Al Paulson, Fort Dodge Community Schools director of bands; and Don Struve, longtime music teacher who retired as band director at IKM-Manning Schools.

Kuemper Catholic Schools Director of Bands Kate Tomaszkiewicz said, “The festival provides a safe and educational place for students to perform a selection that they have spent time learning. All teachers bringing students hope that their students have a positive experience and will grow musically from it.”

Tomaszkiewicz added that she believes the festival was a success, commenting, “Students were gaining a positive experience of being able to perform in front of others. The judges did a fantastic job giving positive comments as well as constructive criticism for improvement. It is always nice to hear from another music teacher on things that you do well on and things that you can improve upon.”

The judge in each performance center selected the day’s outstanding fifth-through-eighth-grade and high-school band and vocal performances. Strom judged in the choir room, Paulson the band room and Struve the library.

Outstanding performers were:

Choir room — Kuemper seventh-grade vocal ensemble of Ella Duncan, Meagen Berger, Sarah Batz, Rheanne Feilmeier, Morgan Bauer and Kyla Schwanz; Carroll Middle School sixth-grade flute trio of Siddalee Roetman, Audrey Schettler and Lilly Campbell. Carroll Middle School took 18 students to the contest and all received Division I ratings.

Band room — Peyton Higby, Kuemper junior, clarinet; and Payton Cote, Carroll Middle School eighth grade, trumpet.

Library — Logan Rial, Kuemper sixth grade, French horn; and Sami Hays, Kuemper senior, flute.
