Carroll Community School District and Kuemper Catholic School System students prepared for the 2013-14 school year that will begin Wednesday by attending open houses Monday evening.
For the first time, Kuemper kicked off the new year by hosting a back-to-school picnic, combined with open houses at the attendance centers.
The picnic was held at the Holy Spirit Center parking lot and playground and served nearly 1,000 people with burgers and hot dogs grilled by Carroll County Cattlemen and Kuemper Booster Club members.
Ice cream was served for dessert with an ice-cream-making machine provided by Farner-Bocken Co.
The event, open to students throughout the school system and their families, also featured dancing led by the high school Kix team to music by Scott and Cindy Masching's Time of Your Life deejay service and tattoos by cheerleaders. Football players did cleanup after the event.
The Kuemper Marketing Committee, made up of parents, employees and board of education members, spearheaded the picnic plans and organization. And Kuemper president Vern Henkenius and marketing department director Mary Neary were happy with the success.
"It was an awesome event," says Neary. She and Henkenius say the picnic gets the new school year off to an exciting, enthusiastic start.
The event was a good way to renew friendships and, meet this year's classmates, as well as for new families to get acquainted, Henkenius says.
