Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation, which will provide need-based tuition assistance next school year to students in Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sioux City, has reached its $2.2 million fundraising goal for 2012.
The diocese has eight Catholic high schools and 11 middle and grade schools with over 6,200 students. Kuemper Catholic Schools in Carroll has four attendance centers — Kuemper High School, St. Lawrence (grades 6-8), St. Angela (grades 4 and 5) and Holy Spirit (preschool-3).
Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization representing all of the Catholic K-12 schools in the Diocese of Sioux City. MLTF raises funds to assist families whose income is at or below 300 percent of the poverty level, providing them with need-based tuition assistance. There are 11 STOs in Iowa with a total of $8.75 million in tax credits available for 2012.
“Once again we feel blessed and very pleased to have achieved this goal. These funds will go to families who want a Catholic education for their children but may have a difficult time affording it,” said Kristie M. Arlt, director of stewardship and development for the diocese.
Contributors to MLTF receive an Iowa income-tax credit equal to 65 percent of their donation, thus reducing their Iowa income-tax obligation in the amount of the tax credit received. The donation may also qualify for federal income-tax deductibility.
“It is amazing how many people have responded to donating to these STO programs. We had over 650 donors give to MLTF this year, the generous support of our donors is a fantastic,” said Arlt.
Dan Ryan, superintendent of Catholic Schools for the diocese, says these tax credits mean a great deal to families,
“The program goes a long way in respecting Iowa parents’ right to direct the education of their children by choosing the educational environment that best meets their child’s needs. The program is a win-win for all,” he says.
Donor forms will also be available online beginning Jan. 2 to make a contribution to MLTF for 2013. The 2013 goal for MLTF is $2.2 million, as allowed by Iowa law.  Specific information about the 2013-2014 tuition-grant application process for families who wish to apply for assistance will be made available via Catholic schools and online at after Jan. 20.
