Adams student wins county honors in Legion Flag Essay Contest
March 19, 2013
A fifth-grade student from Carroll Community Schools has won the county's American Legion Flag Essay Contest.
Nicholas Haberl, a student at Adams Elementary, wrote an essay describing what the flag means to him.
"Whenever I see the American flag I think of my Grandpa, who fought in the Vietnam War," Haberl wrote.
Haberl's grandfather, Vern Weber, presented Haberl with a $50 check at Adams Elementary Monday afternoon.
"I'm proud of him," Weber said.
Weber served in the Army from 1965 to '67 and was a radio teletype operator with an artillery unit in Vietnam in 1967. He retired from a 34-year career with the post office in 2007. The 300-word essay, Haberl said, was supposed to be about flag etiquette and care.
