A 53-year-old Lidderdale man put an alarm clock with a hidden camera in a friend’s house in Ankeny that recorded surreptitious videos of the woman and her two boys — ages 11 and 12 — wearing no clothes in a bathroom, court records show.

Brian Gerard Hoffman faces felony sexual exploitation and other charges for putting the device in the woman’s home in December while she and the boys were away for a vacation.

The woman became suspicious of the clock when Hoffman allegedly called her five times in one day to ask about the lights on the clock and also when Hoffman — upon entering the house — “pushed past her and went directly to the bathroom where the clock was located,” court records show.

An Ankeny police detective found the recordings on a memory card in the clock, which had the capacity to store many hours of video.

Hoffman allegedly admitted in a telephone conversation with the woman that he placed the alarm clock in her house and that it had the ability to connect with his cellphone over the internet. He denied knowing that it had a camera.

Hoffman posted a $26,000 bond to be released from jail on Thursday.

He is charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, unlawful interception of communication and invasion of privacy. Two of the charges are punishable by up to 10 years in prison apiece.
