A 31-year-old Carroll man was arrested Friday night for allegedly wrestling his girlfriend to the ground and strangling her, court records show.

Ronald Earl Barker is charged with domestic abuse assault and interference with official acts. The assault charge is punishable by up to two years in prison.

Barker and the woman were wrestling in their trailer house at 914 U.S. Highway 30 East when Barker became too rough, “causing the female to try and get him to stop,” a police officer wrote in a criminal complaint.

Ronald would not stop and became upset with the female,” the complaint says. “At some point, both parties ended up on the floor, and Ronald began strangling her.”

The girlfriend and another woman escaped to a bedroom and called 911 about 11 p.m.

When officers arrived they found the girlfriend with red marks around her neck.

Barker allegedly refused to let the officers handcuff him and tried to pull away.

“With that I assisted Barker to the ground and onto his stomach by using a leg sweep,” the officer wrote.

Barker was released from jail on Saturday. He is barred from having contact with the alleged victim.

Barker was acquitted of another domestic assault charge in April 2016. He had been arrested earlier that year for punching a different girlfriend in the face, but a judge decided there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him, in part because the alleged victim was the initial aggressor.
