Pizza Hut has sought to reinvent the way consumers eat and order their pizza.

In 1972, Carroll’s Pizza Hut was one of the first to offer delivery, using a pickup truck. By 2010, all other Pizza Huts had caught on and were supplying cars to their stores for delivery.

This month, Pizza Hut in Carroll is celebrating 45 years of business. To honor this anniversary, the restaurant is scaling back its prices to what they were in 1972.

Diners can choose from a $4.95 meat lover’s pizza, 89 cent ham and cheese sandwiches and more. These prices will be offered through Thursday to dine-in customers only.

“It’s been great,” Joe Comes, a second-generation Pizza Hut owner after his parents, Marsha and Frank Comes, who built the store. “We have been very successful in Carroll. We have a loyal following.”

Carroll’s Pizza Hut was the first owned by the Comes family. Today, Joe Comes owns 20 other Pizza Hut chains throughout Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota.

“We are now a model for all Pizza Huts to offer employees cars for a number of reasons — our cars are maintained better and insured,” he said.

The next plan for Pizza Hut in Carroll is a store renovation. Pizza Hut first remodeled its store in 1976 then again in 1984 to its current 39,000-square-foot structure.

Comes described this new remodel as “a significant one.”
