Born Feb. 6, 1930, on her family’s farm near Templeton, she was a daughter of Edward and Katherine (Bluml) Schlichte. Her mother passed away when she was 2 weeks old, and Vernell lived with her aunt Anna Schlichte until she was 8 years old. She moved back to the family home and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. Following her schooling she worked on the farm. She was married to Robert A. Schmitz on April 18, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton by Father Francis Schultes.
The couple made their home in Kinross where they owned and operated Schmitz Hardware Store. They moved to Halbur for several years and later to Arcadia where they raised their family.
She was a homemaker until her kids were raised and then went to work as office manager at her husband’s business, Bob Schmitz Sales and Service in Arcadia. She also managed the rental properties they owned.
She was an active member for 50 years of St. John Parish in Arcadia. After moving to Carroll, she became active with Holy Spirit Parish serving on the guild there as well.
