Ruth was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Odebolt to Shelby and Mabel (Lincoln) Bye.  She graduated from Odebolt High School and then attended Finley Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque.

It was during her training that she met Robert Kelly at Clinton where he was recuperating from three years as a Japanese prisoner of war.

Ruth resided in Odebolt until 1998 when she sold her home and moved to Carroll. As her vision began to fail, she eventually moved to Omaha.

While living in Odebolt, Ruth was curator of the Odebolt Museum for eight years, a member of the Women’s Relief Corps, active with the Nursing Home bazaar, and was an avid organizer and supporter of the Odebolt Creek Days.
