Leo J. Nieland, 84 of Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 24, 2018, at his home.

Funeral Mass was held in Denver on Monday, July 2, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

Memorials in Leo’s honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Leo was born on May 23, 1934, at Breda, Iowa, a son of Leo and Florence (Mueggenberg) Nieland. He graduated from St. Bernard Catholic High School in Breda with the Class of 1951 and graduated from the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1958. He married Dorothy Kelly in Pocahontas, Iowa, in 1957. Upon graduating from Creighton, Leo and Dorothy moved to Denver where Leo entered into private practice as an obstetrics and gynecology specialist.

Leo is survived by his wife, Jane; children Catherine and Michael of California, Susan of New York, John and Rob of Denver; four grandchildren; sister, Marita Bruning of Breda; and sisters-in-law Donita Nieland of Carroll and Gladys Nieland of Breda.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; brothers, Norman and Melvin Nieland; and brother-in-law Delmar Bruning.
