Larry Long, 76, of Carroll, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at his residence in Carroll.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll.  

Officiating will be Father Timothy Johnson.  

Burial will be at Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.  Members of the Iowa State Patrol will form an honor guard at the church and cemetery.  

Honorary casket bearers will be Ed Swain, Dale Hanson, Les Butler, Gary Linder, Marlo Feick, Darrell Keast and Jack Bensley.  

Casket bearers will be Doug Bass, Jeff Cullen, Mike Miller, Brett Tjepkes, Dana Tewes and Joe Thompson.  

Pianist will be Marcy Anderson, and soloist will be Shari Schulte.  

Friends may call at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 p.m. today.  There will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.  

Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Larry was born Oct. 27, 1935, at Webster City, a son of Fred and Maybell (Fosberg) Long.  

Larry spent his younger years in Stanhope and graduated from Stanhope High School with the Class of 1954.  

He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.  

Following military service, Larry worked in the auto-parts business in Webster City and then attended the Iowa State Law Enforcement Academy in Des Moines. He began his career with the Iowa State Patrol in September 1964 and served until his retirement in August 1997 stationed the entire time in Carroll.  

In his spare time, he operated Larry’s Piano Shop, focusing on restoring old pianos and servicing pianos, and was co-owner of M.L. Auto with his son Mike doing auto-body repair and restoring cars.  Larry enjoyed having coffee with his friends, his red Chevy pickup, attending his grandchildren’s activities, and collecting cookbooks.  Larry was a former member of the Iowa State Police Officers Council.

Survivors include his children, Michelle Glick of Carroll and Mike Long and his wife Julie of Carroll; four grandchildren, Riley Long, Spencer Armstrong, Kylie Armstrong, and Alyssa Glick; two sisters, Lorraine McVicker and her husband Jim of Boone and Lois Danielson and her husband Raymond of Ellsworth; and one brother, Lonnie Long and his wife Sandra of Clive.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; and by his son-in-law, Jay Glick.
