Josef Carl Schleisman died unexpectedly on July 19, 2012, in Des Moines, Iowa.

A graveside memorial service for Josef will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish hall.

Josef was born in Iowa City, Iowa on July 16, 1970. Joe was a son of Donald “Dutch” Schleisman Jr, of Carroll and Eileen (Koren Schleisman) Waterman of Mount Carmel.

In his late teens, Joe moved to the Canary Islands with his father. He subsequently moved to Norway where he learned the language, married Yvonne AAlborg, and had two children, Serina and Rebecca. He graduated as a chef from the Norwegian Culinary Institute. While living in Norway, Joe traveled widely in Europe. Joe moved his family to New Mexico where he was the head chef at several prominent restaurants in Albuquerque and was the head of food service for the Albuquerque Convention Center.

As per his Norwegian training, he was well-known for his seafood dishes. Joe is also remembered for his boundless optimism and great sense of humor. Joe divorced and after a few years married Stacey Bridges of Pea Ridge, Ariz., and had a son, Michael.

He is survived by his children Serina Of Edmond, Okla., Rebecca and Michael Schleisman of Springdale, Ariz.; his mother Eileen Waterman; stepfather Randy Waterman; his brothers and sisters, Heidi and Don Schleisman of Albuquerque, N.M., Elijah, Anna and Paul Waterman of Iowa City; aunts and uncles, Sandy and Jerry White of Churdan, Jerry Wiskus of Lidderdale, Jim Schleisman of Fort Dodge, Paul Anderson of Omaha, Neb., Donna and Doug Wiedenman of Burnsville, Minn., Marilyn Korbach of St. Paul, Elaine and Bill Seaman of Kalamazoo, Mich., Steve and Sandy Koren of Parkville, Mo., Al Koren of Mount Carmel, Myron Koren of Council Bluffs and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Josef was preceded in death by his father; paternal and maternal grandparents, Don and Mary Schleisman, Verna and Joe Koren; and aunts Janice Wiskus and Deanna Anderson.
