Barbara F. Saunders, 71, of Manilla, Iowa, died Friday Dec. 9, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Health Center after a courageous battle against cancer.
Barb was born in Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter of Joseph and Lucille (Mackey) Beltrame. She attended Des Moines Technical High School. After graduation she moved to Denison, Iowa. In 1963 she met and married Wayne Saunders, and they made their home in rural Manilla. Barbara worked 36 years in the Manilla and IKM School Districts. She worked as a teaching assistant and computer lab instructor. Her love of children touched many families. Barb was an inspiration to many through her 15 year battle with cancer in that she faced it with grace and a positive attitude.
She enjoyed all the time she spent with family and friends. She loved watching her grandchildren play sports and followed and supported their teams. She enjoyed traveling and times spent at Lake Okoboji. She volunteered as a counselor and director at the Heart Connection Cancer Camp and Presbyterian Church Camp at Lake Okoboji. Barbara also had a close group of girlfriends with whom she shared many laughs and special moments.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 53 years, Wayne Saunders, of Manilla, Iowa; children, Bic Saunders of Sarasota, Florida, Steven (Julie) Saunders of Greenwood, Indiana, and Jeffrey (Mae) Saunders of Nevada, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth (Sean) Smith, Lindsey Quinn, Matthew Saunders, Joey Saunders, Kortney Saunders, Raegan Saunders and Andrew Saunders; sister Janet (Jack) Behle of Bondurant, Iowa; and cousin Joe (Judy) Beltrame of Altoona, Iowa.
A celebration of life will take place at United Presbyterian Church, Denison, Iowa, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. with a memorial service immediately following.
